Top Destinations and Claims of 2024
Bali continued to be a favourite destination for short-haul getaways in 2024. Unsurprisingly, the most common claims in Bali relate to scooter accidents and "Bali Belly." Here are two examples of claims we handled this year:
A serious scooter accident resulted in extensive injuries requiring immediate surgery in Bali. The insured also needed to rearrange their flight home. Thanks to our emergency assistance team, the surgery costs were paid directly, with the insured covering only about $500 out of pocket with the total claim more than $39,000. We managed the remainder of the expenses, ensuring they received timely and effective care without financial stress.
👉 Reminder: With Go Insurance, motorcycles and scooters are automatically covered (subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the Product Disclosure Statement).
Another notable claim involved a family affected by gastroenteritis during their trip. All three children on the policy required medical attention, and the family incurred additional accommodation and flight costs to return home. We stepped in, covering $9,500 in medical expenses and logistical support, ensuring their comfort and well-being.
These scenarios highlight the importance of having the right travel insurance. Accidents and illnesses can happen to anyone, but comprehensive cover ensures access to the best care and support when it’s needed most.
Adventure hubs like Queenstown and Rotorua were bustling with activity in 2024, drawing thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. However, even in destinations close to home, unexpected events can occur, highlighting the importance of comprehensive travel insurance.
One of our top claims for New Zealand involved a severe car accident affecting both insured individuals on the policy. The total claim exceeded $7,000 and included assistance beyond medical care. While Australia's reciprocal health care agreement with New Zealand covered some expenses, the insured still needed support for additional accommodation, mobility aids, airport transfers, and flight upgrades to ensure a safe and comfortable return home.
👉 Reminder: Reciprocal health agreements only cover limited medical expenses and do not extend to additional costs like accommodation, transport, or travel disruptions. Go Insurance policies bridge these gaps, providing comprehensive support.
Whether you’re planning to bungee jump in Queenstown or relax in Rotorua’s hot springs, accidents and unexpected situations can arise. Travel insurance is essential to protect you from the unexpected, ensuring you receive the best care and practical assistance when needed most.
For travellers heading to the USA, the unexpected can be extremely costly. One of this year’s most significant claims involved a medical emergency requiring the insured to be medically disembarked from a cruise for life-saving treatment in Hawaii. The insured was hospitalised for over two weeks with a combination of COVID-19, influenza, and pneumonia.
This complex claim covered extensive medical costs in Hawaii, additional expenses while stranded, and compensation for the lost portion of the cruise. In cases like this, our claims team carefully evaluates both the additional costs incurred and the value of pre-paid arrangements that could not be used. The higher of these costs is approved. In this instance, the lost portion of the cruise represented the higher amount.
As the insured’s return was delayed beyond the original travel dates, we also supported them with extended accommodation, return travel arrangements, and a medical escort to ensure their safe journey home. The total claim amounted to $225,000, highlighting the critical importance of comprehensive travel insurance.
👉 Reminder: Medical care in the USA is among the most expensive globally, and emergencies can lead to significant unforeseen costs. Comprehensive travel insurance is essential to ensure travellers receive the necessary support without financial strain.
This claim is a powerful example of how comprehensive cover provides critical support when it’s needed most. From medical treatment to logistical assistance and recovery support, travel insurance ensures travellers can focus on their well-being rather than the financial burden.
With its rich history and vibrant culture, Europe remained a dream destination for many travellers in 2024. However, even in this enchanting part of the world, unexpected emergencies can arise.
This year’s highest claim in Europe involved a medical emergency onboard a cruise. The insured required immediate disembarkation for specialist treatment and extended hospitalisation. Our support extended beyond medical costs, covering additional accommodation for the co-insured partner, compensation for lost pre-paid tours and activities, and arranging a medical escort home to Australia. The total claim amounted to $175,500.
👉 Reminder: Travel plans can change in an instant, and the cost of medical care and associated disruptions in Europe can add up quickly. Comprehensive travel insurance ensures you are protected against unforeseen events, offering financial and logistical support when it’s needed most.
Whether exploring iconic landmarks or enjoying a cruise, the right cover allows travellers to enjoy their European adventure with confidence, knowing they are prepared for the unexpected.
A holiday to Vietnam took a devastating turn when an unfortunate slip by the pool resulted in a critical brain injury, requiring urgent, life-saving medical intervention. Due to the severity of the situation and the inability to meet care needs locally, the insured was promptly air-ambulanced to Bangkok for specialist treatment.
Over the following weeks, the insured received critical care in Bangkok until they were stable enough to be repatriated to Australia by air ambulance for continued treatment at a local facility. Throughout this challenging journey, we supported the insured and their partner, covering the co-insured’s travel, additional accommodation needs, and ensuring their safe return home together.
This claim, totalling $370,000, highlights the vital role our local emergency teams, international SOS partner, and our claims team play in ensuring your clients receive immediate care and a safe journey home.
👉 Reminder: Serious accidents can occur anywhere, even during moments of relaxation. Comprehensive travel insurance is indispensable, covering not only medical emergencies but also the extensive logistical and financial challenges that arise from unexpected events.
This case underscores the importance of having robust cover that provides peace of mind, no matter where your travels take you.
